REVIEW: Florence + The Machine’s “Never Let Me Go”

I love Florence + The Machine. With the release of “Never Let Me Go”, everyone will see why. Perhaps the best Florence song ever, “Never Let Me Go” is a sweeping, power ballad about surrendering your demons and releasing yourself from the chains that have held you back. Like a modern Sylvia Plath or Virginia Woolf, Florence Welch seems to find salvation in the depths of her despair. Unlike them who chose death, Welch finds that salvation in her music. Although musically brilliant, the song is sad,and makes you sit up and ponder what inspired the lyrical content. Perhaps Florence’s problems with alcohol? Perhaps a depressed artist about to commit suicide? By the end, you find yourself relieved that the subject has found some form of escape from the reality that surrounds them (“and it’s over but I’m not giving up,I’m just giving in”). This song is undoubtedly one of my favourite songs of all time, and is a highlight of the 2012 music year. Rating: 10/10
