Maroon 5 are back with a new single, and it is a sure hit. The track, which features rapper Wiz Khalifa, is a trippy pop song with an infectious melody. “Payphone” is the lead single for the band’s upcoming album Overexposed, due 26th June. Lyrically, the song is emphatic, almost bitter. With lyrics “If happy ever after did exist, I would still be holding you like this. All those fairytales are full of it”, it’s easy to see why. In recent interviews, Adam Levine hinted that Overexposed will be their most pop release to date. “Payphone” is a testament to this.
Not only does the collaboration with Wiz Khalifa add a more urban edge to the sound, but will surely broaden the band’s fan base. It’s interesting how Maroon 5 has steadily grown into a more pop friendly sound, which started with their 2007’s smash single “Makes Me Wonder’’ and reached a new peak in 2011 with the ubiquitous “Moves Like Jagger”. “Payphone” also opens the race for the all important Song of the Summer in the US, and deservingly so.
