Nicki Minaj, along with Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban have been announced as the official judges for the next season of American Idol. Ryan Seacrest tweeted a picture of the happy AI family, confirming the news. This ends weeks of speculation of whether or not the rapper will join the panel. When asked recently about her commitments, Minaj stated that everything in her life is up to her, suggesting that she may have been holding out for a bigger pay day. As you know, artists who take part in these shows have to commit for several months, and the paychecks are often what persuades them to join a show. Minaj also had to deal with the fact that AI is sponsored by Coca Cola, while she’s currently a Pepsi ambassador. I think it’s safe to say they really wanted her to be a part of the show.Simon Fuller, the executive producer of AI, had this to say:
“American Idol’s star power has never been so great. Nicki is an unbelievably captivating international phenomenon who has made an inedible mark on rap and pop, and I know our fans and contestants will fall in love with Keith.”
All of the judges will pocket some huge paychecks. Mariah will receive $18m, the largest yet for a reality tv judge. Nicki will pocket $12m and Keith a measly $6m. How will he survive on such a meager paycheck? I’m sure he’ll find a way.
The new season will air in early 2013, and it’s ratings will be a much talked about topic, surely. Recently, the newly revamped X Factor, with super star judges Britney Spears, Demi Lavato, Simon Cowell and LA Reid, debuted worse than it did last year. This after Simon fired almost everyone in favour of bigger stars. They can’t be happy about the ratings dip at all. American Idol, however, is the grand daddy of singing competitions. If anyone can secure success with a new line-up, it has to be them.
What do you think, are they the show to beat? Which show do you prefer: The Voice, American Idol or The X Factor? Sound off in the comments section.
