This year’s EMAs take place in Frankfurt, Germany this Sunday, so I thought it would be fun to look at the major categories and guess who’ll emerge victorious. Award shows like the EMAs, which are based on fan votes, have a tendency to reward artist with a big fan base and not necessarily the best talent in each category. I like pop music. Ultimately it becomes the main soundtrack to our lives, because it is just inescapable. No matter how indie you are, there will always be a pop song that creeps up on you, surprising even yourself at how much you like it. That being said, let’s look at the big categories.
First up, we have the Best Song category. The nominees are Carly Rae Jepsen (Call Me Maybe), fun. (We Are Young), Gotye (Somebody That I Used To Know), Pitbull (International Love) and Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris (We Found Love). First up, “Call Me Maybe” is a disgusting song. If you look at what was wrong with music in 2012, this song comes out on top. It’s banal, pedestrian and speaks to the lowest common denominator. It’s really not even that catchy, but to each their own. “Somebody That I Used To Know” is a great track. It’s sad that Gotye’s career will probably steer the way of James Blunt or Daniel Powter’s. Nonetheless, the song was a legitimate moment in pop music and may just be recognized. As for Pitbull, “International Love” is a horrible song. It’s a disgrace that it’s being included in this category. The safest bet for this category belongs to fun. and Rihanna. “We Are Young” was the most anthemic single and made a connection with demographics across the board, and is just a great soundtrack for life. What makes it even better is the fact that the band has proven they can carve out careers for themselves on pop radio. As for “We Found Love”, I have a feeling it may continue its VMA success. It’s a great song with great production from Calvin Harris who, if I may say, doesn’t get nearly as much respect as he deserves.
Who should win: I’d be happy if either fun. or Rihanna takes this category.
Who will probably win: fun. or Rihanna will probably take this one. I’d also be happy if Gotye were recognized for the amazing “Somebody That I Used To Know”.
The category for Best Video sees Katy Perry (Wide Awake), Lady Gaga (Marry The Night), Psy (Gangnam Style), Rihanna (We Found Love) and M.I.A duking it out. Honestly, there hasn’t been amazing music videos this year except for M.I.A’s “Bad Girls”. The video is so hot, giving the award to anyone else would be an injustice.
Who should win: M.I.A “Bad Girls”
Who will probably win: Rihanna or M.I.A
In the Best Female category, the nominees are spot on for what’s going in pop music right now. Katy Perry, Rihanna, Pink, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj are all great contenders, and the winner will probably take it by a pretty small margin.
Who should win: Definitely Rihanna
Who will probably win: Due to them being bigger than the others in Europe, I’d say Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are leading the pack.
The Best Male category has Justin Bieber, Jay Z, Kanye, Flo Rida and Pitbull. As for Pitbull and Flo Rida’s nominations: LOL! They should feel honoured to be nominated in the same category as Kanye West and Jay Z. However, Bieber is doing his thing this year. Believe is a decent album, and I’d say he’s the one to beat.
Who should win: Justin Bieber, Kanye or Jay Z
Who will probably win: Justin Bieber, Kanye or Jay Z
The Best New Act has some of my favourite newbies fun., Lana Del and Rita Ora going head-to-head with Carly Rae Jepsen and boy band One Direction. While One Direction have taken the world by storm, there hasn’t been an artist as individual as Lana Del Rey, or as fun as,erm, fun. What I would like to see is the talent taking this category, not obsessed teen girls who’ll eventually desert the boy band they’re so frantically supporting right now.
Who should win: fun., Lana Del Rey or Rita Ora
Who will probably one: One Direction
Best Pop Act nominees are Justin Bieber, No Doubt, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Taylor Swift. This is a tough one. All these acts are, as I’ve said, great pop acts. I love that No Doubt is back on the scene. Their album is tight. There’s no way Taylor Swift will take this, though. She’s just not as big in Europe.
Who should win: Rihanna or Justin Bieber.
Who will probably win: Rihanna or Justin Bieber.
The Best Rock category nominees are Coldplay, Muse, Linkin Park, Green Day and The Killers. This isn’t even a contest, Coldplay should win hands down.
Who should win: Coldplay. I’ve seen them live, and was absolutely surprised hoow much Chris Martin can rock out.
Who will probably win: They’ve been touring Europe this year, so I’m pretty sure Coldplay will bag this.
The Best Alternative nominees are Arctic Monkeys, Jack White, The Black Keys, Lana Del Rey and Florence + The Machine. This is the first category that was properly thought through, I think. Every single act is worthy of their nomination. They all bring a fresh alternative to the pop landscape, and I’ll be glad to see any of them take it.
Who should win: Florence + The Machine
Who will probably win: All of them have a shot. This one is too close to call.
The Best Electronic Act nominees are Avicii, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Skrillex and David Guetta. Really, guys let’s make it interesting and leave David Guetta out of this. I’ll be seeing Swedish House Mafia on tour in South Africa next year, so I’m kind of stoked that they’re in this category. They’re good. Be that as it may, no other act has seen greater commercial success in Europe than Calvin Harris. His remix of Florence +The Machine’s “Spectrum” earned the band their first UK number one. He also had success with Florence Welch with “Sweet Nothing”, which also went to number one. Then there was that little song called “We Found Love with Rihanna, and not forgetting Cheryl Cole’s “Call My Name”.
Who should win: Calvin Harris
Who will probably win: Calvin Harris
Best Hip-Hop will either go to Jay Z and Kanye West for Watch The Throne or Nicki Minaj, with Best Live Act probably being taken home by Lady Gaga.
There you have it. My predictions for the big categories are in, and I hope these artists will all take away the big awards. Who do you think will win? Let me know in the comments section. The awards will be televised live on Sunday at around 20h00 CET, and will be hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum. Follow me on twitter for a live tweetathon throughout. Below is a video of Lady Gaga performing “Marry The Night” at last year’s EMAs, which was held in Belfast:
