By now, everyone with a mobile web connection is aware that Rihanna is bringing her Diamonds World Tour to South Africa in October. Brought to you by Big Concerts, in association with Live Aid, the Bajan bombshell is bringing her cockiness to Joburg and Cape Town, where she is set to perform on the 13th and 16th, respectively. With her impressive roster of hits, the concerts are sure to be a musical highlight this year.
As much as we are excited about the tour, there is still the unanswered question about who will open for Rihanna on the South African leg of her tour. The South African music market is relatively small, and Big Concerts has made some dodgy choices with regards to opening acts in the (not so distant) past. Remember when The Muffinz opened for Red Hot Chilli Peppers in February? Yeah, that. Alas, we are here to help. Since we know best, we’ve selected two artists who, in our humble opinion, would be perfect for the shows.
1. A$AP Rocky
Currently the North American support artist for the Diamonds World Tour, A$AP Rocky makes the most sense. His debut album Long.Live.A$AP debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, and has turned up hits like “Fucking Problem”, “1 Train” and the Skrillex-assisted “Wild For The Night”. A$AP has become a staple in SA clubs in recent months. His penchant for designer clothes, and his friendship with Rihanna makes him the perfect support act for the SA leg of the tour. Besides, we deserve to see up-and-coming international support acts at these shows, Big Concerts. Check out his video for “Wild For The Night” below. We dare you to disagree.
2. Flash Republic
We haven’t forgotten that the concerts will take place in SA. Yes, the tour also needs a South African opening act. These opening slots are the perfect platform for our local acts to reach a bigger audience. Believe us, we have looked at countless South African acts to support Rihanna on her tour. We kept coming back to one band: Flash Republic. Why? Well, who else can rival Rihanna’s sexiness on stage better than Tamara Dey? We’ve seen them perform a couple of times now, and their on-stage energy and shows remain consistent. Their music infiltrates your body, turning even the biggest wallflower into the life of the party. Did we mention how sexy Tamara Dey is? She even has the pipes to match.
They’ve been off the scene for a minute, giving their lead singer Tamara Dey time to heal from vocal chord surgery. Their last album, In The Name Of Dance, saw them release party jams “Lonely”, “We Are The Kids” and the album’s title track. Haven’t heard of them yet? Check out one of their biggest tunes “Twister” below:
Do you have any other local acts in mind to open for Rihanna on her SA tour? Comment and tell us. We pay for these shows, it’s only right that Big Concerts listens and give in to our demands. Tickets for the shows are still available from Big Concerts as well as Computicket
